Catasetuim Melana Davison

(Catasetum denticulatum 'SVO' AM/AOS  x  Catasetum Penang 'Sweet Heart')

This grex has produced a variety of eye-catching flower colors, from solid deep burgundy to white blotched burgundy and white with fine red spotting.  This is a new mini-Catasetum, with mature plants only 5” tall thanks to the influence of Catasetum denticulatum.  Expect 15-20 flowers, 2-3 times per season.  It's always interesting to see the effect of reciprocal breeding on the flower quality, and SVO 5995 is the reciprocal.  This was SVO item 5001

Awarded Exhibits:

To the casual orchid grower, this information might not be of any interest, but if you are looking to determine a popular and notable orchid, this information is useful.  The orchid,  Catasetum Orchidglade  (Genus / "Grex Name") is popular among experienced orchid growers and its history of numerous awards from around the world supports that claim.  It also shows that judges, whom are typically more experienced orchid growers - recognize this particular orchid.  Scores are based on set standards.  If an orchid consistently gets high scores, it possesses desired qualities, such as size of bloom, number of blooms and more. This recognition gets the attention of hybridizers in including the Catasetum Orchidglade as a parent in future hybridizing.

By making a note of the month that this orchid has been judged, one could determine the average peak season, but the final determination is conditions in your immediate growing area.

Normally, I would list awarded exhibits in chronological order, however the Catasetum Orchidglade has a group of 20 awarded cultivar names and it makes sense based on simplicity to list the names in alphabetical order along with basic scoring information.
