(Ctsm. Millie's Frilly Dragon 'Chocolate Frills' x Ctsm. Hat Trick 'Top Hat' AM/AOS)

This takes the award for the 'coolest' cross on this year's list!  As some of you long-time Catasetum growers know, I've been obsessed with frilly-lipped flowers for many years. Millie's Frilly Dragon (Frilly Doris x Voodoo Dragon) was such a fun cross. The flowers all had excellent frilly lips in a range of nice colors, and the plants were excellent, robust growers that produced lots of flowers on long inflorescences. An equally fun cross is Hat Trick (José Abalo x fimbriatum var. morrenianum). These bloomed with funky, frilly lips on dark burgundy flowers, combining the dark color of fimbriatum var. morrenianum, and the large flower size, dark color and strong upright stems of 20+ blooms from José Abalo. By combining these two parents, we will be assured of frilly lips and high flower count. Flower color will mostly be dark burgundy and chocolate, but some densely spotted flowers will appear.  Overall, this is a super fun cross with lots of potential.  (SVO 7655)

1 August 2019

  • new bulb thickness at base:  less than 2 inches
  • new bulb height:  less than 2 inches
  • total height: less than 12 inches
  • leaf spread:  less than 12 inches

The above is just a base to compare progress of growth come September and nothing more.

Late July into August we are well into the grow cycle of Catasetinaes so I simply potted this orchid up into my standard customized pot to minimize disturbing the roots.  At least it gave me a chance to scan the roots for their condition.  I also potted this one slightly differently.  From a point just above the drainage holes on the sides, I used clay pellets, and above the clay pellets, I centered the orchid and loosely packed some fresh moss around the edges.  In the original pot, the roots were surrounding styrofoam peanuts so I left that in place.

I predict that this orchid will explode in new growth and hopefully show signs of spike soon.
