This is the first man-made nearly pure black orchid. One of the most famous of the black orchids with incredible flower displays that have a spicy sweet fragrance. The flowers emerge during or after the foliage sheds for the blooming season. After the flowers fall (they last about 6 to 8 weeks), water sparsley and do not add fertilizer until a new growth emerges from the base and reaches about 4 to 5 inches in height. Overall easy to grow and flower. During the grow season in late spring to summer months water frequently and fertilize often. They can handle bright light conditions. These are very nice large plants with 4 bulbs or 3 bulbs and a new growth that is nearly mature (January 2017)

Fredclarkeara = (Catasetum x Clowesia x Mormodes).  Fdk. After Dark ‘Black Pearl’ is one of the few truly black orchids in existence.  However color is dependent upon culture and light exposure while viewing the flowers.  To some it appears to be a very dark purple-red to others it appears to be true black.  Expect mature plants, with leaves, to be 20” – 25” tall.  When deciduous expect the naked pseudobulbs to be 10” – 15”.  Inflorescences are produced from the basal ½ of the naked to nearly naked pseudobulbs.  Each pseudobulb can produce 1-3 inflorescences.  Inflorescences are semi-pendant to pendant, 12” – 20” long, and can carry 8-25 flowers each.  Individual flowers are 1” – 1 ¼” across.

As with most Catasetinae these are easily grown and flowered when given bright light and a distinct dry rest period.  Plants should be kept in relatively small pots.  Plants begin growth in March – May.  During the growing season they like copious water but prefer to dry out between.  Plants flower as each new growth matures, but some flower with the new growth.  Plants will mature their growths August – October.  At this point cut back on water.  When the leaves have completely fallen off only water enough to keep the pseudobulbs from shriveling.   The following season wait until the new growth is about 2” – 4” tall with developing roots before beginning to water normally.  This is usually the best time to repot.  Repotting when the plants are early in their active growth and when the roots are still short.  Plants grow well under Cattleya levels of light but will proliferate and flower better under stronger light.

SVO 2033

Fdk. After Dark  (Mo. Painted Desert ‘SVO’ HCC/AOS x Ctsm. Donna Wise ‘Susan’ AM/AOS)

The original cross produced an impressive 8 FCC, 4 AM, 3 CCE/AOS and an Award of Distinction.  This remake has produced 50% of the flowers in shades of black.  This will be the last offering of seedling Fdk. After Dark.   Orchid breeding history has been made with this cross, now is your chance to get your own individual plant.  What else needs to be said?
