Unregistered Hybrid
Catasetum Dentigrianum ( Ctsm. denticulatum 'Orange Lip' x Ctsm. tigrinum 'SVO' )
This is a new direction in SVO breeding! Figuring out and capitalizing on the best attributes a species has to offer and pairing it another for overall improvement is what we're all about. Ctsm. tenebrosum is the first Catasetum species to bloom each year, and this recently awarded cultivar has been part of my breeding stock for over 18 years. Flowers have flat petals and sepals in a beautiful dark burgundy with a contrasting green lip, on upright stems of 15-20 blossoms. The callosum is also recently awarded and is an exceptional example of this species. Flower color is a dark, deep burgundy, and the rich green lip is densely covered with dark spotting. This plant produces 25-30 well arranged flowers on a gracefully arched inflorescence. These will be easy to grow, and quick to flower. I am expecting that a mature plant will produce 15+ flowers per stem 2-3 times a year: spring, summer and again in fall. Flower color will be in dark burgundy tones. Lips will be more variable, with some deep green, others spotted and some as dark as the petals and sepals.. ( - Fred Clarke, Sunset Valley Orchids )

Monnierara Millenium Magic "Witchcraft"
Catasetum DF Adriana Feitoza
Catasetum DF Adriana Feitoza
There is Catasetum royalty in the ancestry of this cross. Ctsm. John C. Burchett (João Stivalli x Susan Fuchs) is a spectacular hybrid! The huge, flat, nearly black lip of the cultivar 'Ursa Major' really impressed the judges when this plant received a First Class Certificate for Ryan Kowalczyk. 'Ursa Major' blooms 2-3 times a year and often produces female flowers on its first flowering of the season, making it a frequent capsule parent. Susan Fuchs has a stellar reputation as well. It is an excellent plant with large bright yellow flowers boldly spotted with burgundy and a habit of blooming multiple times a year. This is an outrageously nice pairing: huge flowers, huge lips, and bright colors on plants that bloom several times a year. A real must-have!

8128 Cataseum NoID ( Ctsm. Fong Cing 'Lonely Heart' x Ctsm. Richard Fulford SVO' )
Unregistered Hybrid
Catasetum NoID ( Ctsm. Fong Cing 'Lonely Heart' x Ctsm. Richard Fulford SVO' )
Flower quality in Portagee Star is surprisingly nice, with just three species in its background: pileatum, expansum and tenebrosum. The shape is full, the lip is flat and the color is an attractive yellow with a bit of red. What makes Catasetum lucis remarkable is its upright 4' long inflorescence that carries many long-lived green flowers with white lips. Earlier crosses in this style of breeding have been excellent. We are expecting flower color to range between yellow with a red blush to pure white. These will have high flower count, strong stems and flower longevity of 3-4 weeks, a nice trait passed on by lucis to its offspring. These will surprise you with their flower quality! 8078 Cycnodes NoID ( Cyc. Richard Brandon 'Xtra Wide Petals' x Morm. Exotic Treat 'SVO' AM/AOS )
(Cyc. Richard Brandon 'Xtra Wide Petals' x Morm. Exotic Treat 'SVO' AM/AOS)
Here we are on different path, in fact a new path. This is the first intergeneric hybrid using complex hybrids of Cycnoches and Mormodes. Richard Brandon (warscewiczii x Jean E. Monnier) produces robust-growing, easy-to-bloom plants. The cultivar ‘Xtra Wide Petals’ has the highest-quality well-shaped flowers seen from any Richard Brandon, and it is becoming an important parent in our breeding program. This Exotic Treat (sinuata x tuxtlensis) has amazing color, with bright orange-yellow flowers and bold burgundy spotting. As a bonus, mature plants can produce 3-4 flower stems at a time. We know from experience that this type of breeding combines the best qualities from both parents: the Cycnoches is dominant for shape, and the Mormodes is dominant for color. I am very anxious to see these bloom! The expectation is for well-shaped yellow to bronze flowers with bold burgundy spotting. 8091-6 Catasetum NoID ( Ctsm. Melana Davison 'Hoorah' x Ctsm. Isobel's Sunshine 'SVO' )
Catasetum NoID ( Ctsm. Melana Davison 'Hoorah' x Ctsm. Isobel's Sunshine 'SVO' )
Melana Davison (denticulatum x Penang) 'Hoorah' is particularly beautiful due to the yellow base color of the lip and red markings throughout. This Isobel's Sunshine (Portagee Star x kleberianum) has a bright yellow lip with dark bars of burgundy on the petals and sepals. Here we are aiming for large flat yellow lips with red to burgundy petals and sepals, all on a mini-Catasetum plant. We liked the combination so much we made the cross twice! See SVO 8096.
